    Get PDF
The European Higher Education Area and the implantation of the European Credit Transfer System have promoted a change in the educational model and, hence, a change in the evaluation system. This paper describes the negative experience in the first year of the course Fundamentals of Programming in the new Computer Science Degrees at University of Seville. The negative experience has been an overevaluation of the students caused by an excessive evaluation planning. To overcome this negative experience, a new plan of continuous assessment of skills is planned. This plan is being implemented at present and the partial conclusions obtained are described in this paper.Peer Reviewe

Leveraging Hardware QoS to Control Contention in the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC

The interference co-running tasks generate on each other’s timing behavior continues to be one of the main challenges to be addressed before Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoCs) are fully embraced in critical systems like those deployed in avionics and automotive domains. Modern MPSoCs like the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ incorporate hardware Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms that can help controlling contention among tasks. Given the distributed nature of modern MPSoCs, the route a request follows from its source (usually a compute element like a CPU) to its target (usually a memory) crosses several QoS points, each one potentially implementing a different QoS mechanism. Mastering QoS mechanisms individually, as well as their combined operation, is pivotal to obtain the expected benefits from the QoS support. In this work, we perform, to our knowledge, the first qualitative and quantitative analysis of the distributed QoS mechanisms in the Xilinx UltraScale+ MPSoC. We empirically derive QoS information not covered by the technical documentation, and show limitations and benefits of the available QoS support. To that end, we use a case study building on neural network kernels commonly used in autonomous systems in different real-time domains. This work has been partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under grant PID2019-107255GB; the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 878752 (MASTECS) and the European Research Council (ERC) grant agreement No. 772773 (SuPerCom).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Localized magnetoplasmon modes arising from broken translational symmetry in semiconductor superlattices

The electromagnetic propagator associated with the localized collective magnetoplasmon excitations in a semiconductor superlattice with broken translational symmetry, is calculated analytically within linear response theory. We discuss the properties of these collective excitations in both radiative and non-radiative regimes of the electromagnetic spectra. We find that low frequency retarded modes arise when the surface density of carriers at the symmetry breaking layer is lower than the density at the remaining layers. Otherwise a doublet of localized, high-frequency magnetoplasmon-like modes occurs.Comment: Revtex file + separate pdf figure

Monocytes; Rheumatoid arthritis; TocilizumabMonocitos; Artritis reumatoide; TocilizumabMonòcits; Artritis reumatoide; TocilizumabPlatelets (PLT) bind to a significant percentage of circulating monocytes and this immunomodulatory interaction is increased in several inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. The therapeutic blockage of IL-6 with Tocilizumab (TCZ) alters PLT and the phenotype and function of monocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the relationship between monocyte–PLT conjugates (CD14+PLT+) and clinical and immunological variables and the regulation of this interaction by IL-6 blockage are still unknown. Here, we compared the presence of monocyte–PLT conjugates (CD14+PLT+) and membrane CD162 expression using flow cytometry, and, by ELISA, the markers of PLT activation (sCD62P and sCD40L) in healthy donors (HD) and patients with long-standing RA before TCZ (baseline). We found higher percentages and absolute counts of CD14+PLT+, and higher plasmatic levels of sCD62P and sCD40L but lower CD162 expression on monocytes from RA patients than those from HD. Additionally, the levels of CD14+PLT+ inversely correlated with inflammatory parameters. Interestingly, 95% of patients with lower percentages of CD14+PLT+ and only 63% of patients with higher percentages of CD14+PLT+ achieved a EULAR-defined response at four weeks (p = 0.036). After TCZ, the percentage of CD14+PLT+ increased in 92% of RA patients who achieved 12 w-remission (p < 0.001). Our results suggest that the binding of PLTs has a modulatory effect, accentuated by the increased binding of PLTs to monocytes in response to the therapeutic blockage of IL-6.This study is supported by Instituto de Salud Carlos III and Fondos FEDER (PI17/00072 and PI20/00184)

A Peptide/Fullerene Hybrid for Multivalent Recognition of E-Selectin

Molecular recognition through ligand-receptor interactions is a very important mechanism for metastatic processes. Among all of them, multivalent protein-carbohydrate interactions play a fundamental role in tumor cell-endothelial cell recognition processes. In particular, the interaction between SLex and SLea expressed in circulating tumor cells and proteins of the family of selectins, overexpressed in endothelial cells. Unlike tumor cells, vascular endothelial cells receptors are a stable target not subjected to genetic modifications. In addition, the elimination of a single endothelial cell involves the death of hundreds of tumor cells. Targeting endothelial receptors cells offers a high potential in tumor diagnosis and therapy. SLex and SLea are the natural ligands of selectins, but their complicated chemical synthesis and their low affinity for selectins made difficult to continue with their development. Recently, through "phase display" it was identified a simple peptide with a linear sequence of seven amino acids (Ile-Glu-Leu-Leu-Gln-Ala-Arg) called IELLQAR that interacts specifically with selectins. IELLQAR is a very simple compound, which can be synthesized using SPPS. IELLQAR can be functionalized and easily conjugated to fullerenes for its multivalent presentation. In addition, it can be combined with diagnostic and therapeutic agents. References [1] Smith, B. A. H.; Bertozzi, C. Nat. Rev. Drug Discov. 2021, 20, 217.243.

[EN]: The direct contribution of microbial activity to the formation of iron-oxide minerals is difficult to prove in wetlands due to the high reactivity of solid iron phases with different compounds and the variety of redox processes that may occur at each oxic-anoxic boundary. Here, we propose an explanation for the formation of iron-oxide films in wetlands and groundwater seepage areas fed by sandy aquifers based on the interaction of hydrological, chemical and microbiological processes under circumneutral conditions. The presence of a floating iron-oxide film was found to create a boundary at the air-water interface that maintains a suboxic and slightly acidic environment below the film compared with the environments obtained in other free-film wetland areas. The water trapped below this film had an average pH of 6.1, was particularly poor in O2, HCO–3, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Tot-S, and has high concentrations of Tot-P, Tot-Fe, NH+4 and Zn. The formation of a floating iron-oxide film was reproduced under anaerobic conditions after progressive enrichment through the incubation of natural sediment samples in the laboratory. Heterotrophic bacteria belonging to the genus Enterobacter were the dominant bacteria in the enrichments that resulted in the formation of a floating iron-oxide film. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the presence of two-line ferrihydrite was common to the iron-oxide films collected in both the natural environment and the laboratory cultures, whereas other iron-oxides (goethite and low-crystalline lepidocrocite) were observed only in the natural environment. We are grateful to Han Golterman for his support and suggestions.
